Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of zinc ascorbate dental gel on the oral hygiene of canines presenting symptoms of periodontal disease. The study included 39 client- owned canines from a private practice veterinary clinic. After presenting symptoms of periodontal disease in a routine examination, each canine was scored on a scale of 0-4 in the categories of halitosis, gingivitis, and plaque hardness. After using zinc ascorbate dental gel daily for the two weeks preceding a dental cleaning procedure, the teeth of the canine were scored again using the same scale used prior to the dental prophylaxis. Analysis of the difference in scores shows high statistical significance in the difference in scores, meaning that the dental gel had a positive effect on the oral hygiene of canines in each category that was studied.
