Abstract

This study was designed to examine the relationship between stereotype disconfirmation and negative attitudes and consequences. One hundred and twenty six participants were exposed to either a stereotype confirming or stereotype disconfirming African-American male, and then were asked to make judgments about a subsequent African-American male. It was predicted that participants exposed to an African-American male who dressed or spoke in a stereotype disconfirming way would have more negative attitudes towards a second African-American male than if exposed to a stereotype confirming African-American male. There were no significant differences in attitude found between participants exposed to a stereotype disconfirming African-American male versus a stereotype confirming African-American male. This work can be used to understand the interactions between the many functions and processes of stereotyping, such as cognition, stereotype disconfirmation and maintenance, and prejudice and discrimination, as well as help to guide future research.
